What are the Long Beach Mayoral Candidates saying about being bike friendly?

What are the Long Beach Mayoral Candidates saying about being bike friendly?

Election season has had it official kick off in Long Beach.  And this election will have a major impact on the future of Long Beach as a bike friendly community.

LB Mayoral Forum on the environmentIn April the City of Long Beach will elect a new Mayor and up to seven new council members (there are nine council members in total).  These newly elected officials will have a profound impact on the future of bicycling in Long Beach.

They can help Long Beach continue its meteoric rise in becoming bike friendly. They can help keep Long Beach in the national light as a place that is unique in Southern California.  They can be proactive in helping to improve our community by making it a place where people want to Live, Bike and Work.

Or they can say “bikes are fine…but let’s not make them a big deal.  Bikes are fine…but let’s not continue to put in new bike lanes. Bikes are fine…but let’s not push for more education. Bikes are fine…but we all know that cars rule.”

Will they support continued development of bike and ped friendly infrastructure?  Will they support bicycling education in our schools and throughout our community?  Will they support events such as Ciclovia?  Will they be proactive in helping Long Beach reach it’s goal of making bicycling an accepted, well utilized and safe mode of transportation.

Between now and the election BIKEable Communities will help you find out  what each of our mayoral and city council candidates is saying about issues that are important for making Long Beach truly one of the most bike friendly cities in the US. We will provide excerpts from debates, we will ask all of the candidates to provide written responses to questions regarding bicycling, walking and active living. We will do video interviews giving all of the candidates an opportunity to tell the community what they will do if elected with regard to making Long Beach a truly unique Southern California City that attracts residents, visitors and workers by promoting a bike friendly culture.

The Mayor Race

Last Thursday the Long Beach Chapter of the Sierra Club sponsored a mayoral forum on the environment.  The forum was held at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.  Four candidates chose to participate in the forum:  Robert Garcia, Bonnie Lowenthal,  Doug Otto and Gerrie Schipske.

Of the many questions asked one specifically dealt with the future of bicycling in Long Beach.  .

Please let us know if there are specific questions you would like to have the candidates address.

The intent of this is not to endorse any specific candidate, but to help you, the voter be more informed about where each of the candidates stand on issues related to bicycling, walk and active living in the City of Long Beach.
